Turret 35b (Busy Gap) (Haydon)
[NY 7990 6973] TURRET [G.S.] (Site of) (1)
Turret 35b is at the top of the ridge before the descent into Busy Gap. (2)
Examination in 1946 indicated that it had been disused during the Roman period. (3)
No visible remains. (4)
Scheduled. (5)
Trenched in 1947. This is one of a number of turrets and milecastle trenched by C E Stevens between 1946 and 1947 to establish legionary involvement in the building of Hadrian's Wall. This hypothesis is now rejected by most scholars. (6)
Site visited as part of a Farm Environment Plan, where assessed as in a good condition. (7)
The turret was located in 1913 (8b). The excavation in 1946 (see authority 3) showed that the turret had narrow walls and a door to the E. A slight platform at NY 7990 6973 survives 3.8m NW/SE x 5.5m transversely and up to 0.5m high. It is partially overlain by Wall tumble and has no internal features. (8a)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (8c)
General association with HER 7827 (Milecastle 35), HER 7828 Turret 35a). (8)
