Resting Gap unenclosed settlement and field system (Melkridge)
An unenclosed prehistoric round house accompanied by scattered clearance cairns and about 3 hectares of cord rig survive as earthworks at Resting Gap. (1)(2)
A prehistoric unenclosed settlement with associated cord rig is recorded as earthworks on aerial photographs of Resting Gap, in area centred on NY 735 694. Possible hut circles are identified at NY 7364 6948 (10m diameter; defined by bank with outer ditch), NY 7359 6946, NY 7365 6952, and a slightly larger (12m diameter) and less well-defined example at NY 7372 6960. Part of possibly another, defined by a ditch, occurs at NY7357 6942.
The open settlement is associated with minor fields of cord rig at NY 7375 6958, NY 7369 6959, NY 7365 6957, and a more extensive area (170m by 120m) centred on NY 7355 6939. comprising up to four fields.
Clearance cairns are visible at NY 7355 6952, NY 7374 6957, NY 7375 6954, with one at NY 7353 6947 showing major disturbance at centre. (3)(4a-b)
Field survey identified eight possible roundhouse sites, 24 cairns and four areas of cord rig.
The possible settlement site at NY7357 6942 was interpreted as a turf-covered clearance cairn.
Hut circle at NY 73636 69483 measured 8.7m E-W by 8.5m N-S, with a bank up to 0.4m high, and a possible entrance through the south side.
The ring bank at NY 73731 69601 measures 9m E-W by 8m N-S with a robber trench in near the centre. Its location on the crest of a ridge suggests it may have been a burial monument rather than a hut circle. A similar suggestion is made for the feature at NY 73562 69528 which has a collapsed cist and a low mound in the centre.
Five areas of cord rig corresponded to those described by Authority 4 above, although no boundary banks were identified.
A group of five cairns at NY 73588 69439 were different in character to others recorded here and had a more defined shape. (5)
