Cawfields Roman milestones (Haltwhistle)
[NY 7177 6663] ROMAN MILESTONES [G.S.] found AD. 1882 [T.I.] (1)
Three cylindrical milestones, found in 1882, lying on the south side of the Military Way about 205 yds east-south-east of milecastle 42. Two, with 3rd century inscriptions, (nos. 2306 and 2307) are in Chesters Museum. (2)
The third, uninscribed, still lies on the spot. (3)
The stone is recumbent at NY 71776662. (4)
NY 71776662. Roman milestones from Cawfields:-
i) (RIB 2306) Severus Alexander (222-3). Rough cylinder, 1.15m high, 0.46m diameter. Shallow lettering, inscription ends 'MP XVIII';
ii) (RIB 2307) Numerian (282-3). Rough cylinder, 1.32m high, 0.46m diameter. Lettering almost worn away. May have been an earlier text;
iii) Uninscribed. Rough cylinder, c1.2m high, 0.4m diameter, tapering slightly. Still at find spot. (5)
Scheduled. (6)
The remaining milestone is in a recumbent position. It measures 1.38 x 0.4 x 0.30m and is rectangular and crudely rounded. It lies in long grass. The two others were removed to Chesters Museum. (7a)
