Haltwhistle Burn Roman Watermill (Haltwhistle)
[NY 7113 6654] ROMAN WATERMILL [GS] (Site of) [T.I.]
Excavated AD 1908 [T.1.] (1)
Excavation at Haltwhistle Burn Head, in 1907, revealed a square Roman building subsequently identified as a water-mill, with a rampart and ditch on the land side. Many large fragments of millstones, eight handmills, pottery, and a Roman coin were found, all of which dated the building to 'not earlier than 250 AD ... and not much later than the end of the 3rd century'. (2)
The large power driven mill stones are now in Chesters museum. (3)
The site is now covered by a quarry spoil-heap. There are no visible remains. (4)
Scheduled. (5)
Simpson's excavations were published in 1976 (6b). Remains of foundations or a bridge can be identified in the river bank. No other trace apart from a slight rise in the gound. (6a-b)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6c)
