Hethpool Tower House (Kirknewton)

Remains of a late 14th century tower. (2)

Only three walls of the tower survive, rising to a maximum height of 5m, and ivy-clad. (3)

NT 894283 Remains of bastle. (See Type-site NY 88 SE 14). No change. (4)(5)

Ruins of probable tower. Three walls ?rectangular structure c.7m wide and at least 7m long, built of large rubble. South-west and south-east walls c.1.6m thick, north-east wall c.0.6m. South-east wall has internal set-back at first floor level, and window or recess above. All walls, and especially external faces, heavily ivyed. The 1541 list refers to a 'lytle stone house or pyle' (although Ramm et al state the reference is to a bastle). Medieval or sub-medieval building in garden east of Hethpool House. (6)

Built of random rubble and covered by the most luxuriant and rampant ivy. (8)

The tower was built before 1415 when Robert Manners owned it, and was still functional in 1541. Not a bastle. (9b)
