Two Bronze Age cairns near Butteryhaugh Bridge (Kielder)
(NY 63779222) The cairn called the Deadman is about 20 yds in diameter and has been opened. There is a very small cairn close to it on the south side. (1)
A large round cairn of stones. No trace of large stones of peristalith. Some holes in the cairn are probably the work of shepherds. (2)
A round cairn of large stones, 21m in diameter, with a maximum height of 1.8m, situated on a south facing slope. There are no traces of a kerb or ditch and the centre is generally disturbed. The site is entirely surrounded by coniferous forest, and the small cairn to the south referred to by MacLauchlan could not be located. See photograph. (3)
Published survey 25 inch revised. (4)
As described except that the cairn measures 19.5m maximum diameter. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5)
NY 6378 9221. Two round cairns 870m SE of Butteryhaugh Bridge including Deadman Cairn. Scheduled RSM No 25105. The Deadman Cairn measures 20m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 1.8m. Its centre has been disturbed by 19th century excavation and more recent shepherd activity. The smaller cairn on the S side of Deadman Cairn is 5m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 0.6m. It too has a hole in its centre resulting from 19th-century investigations. (6)
Surveyed at 1:500. (7a)
