Shieling in Woolfe Kennel Cave (Tarset with Greystead)
NY 63987842. 'The 'Woolf Kennall' (88) habitable cave (15ft by 6ft internally) improved by digging out interior and walling-up gaps. Smoke-blackened hole through roof above ledge opposite entrance'. (1)
Situated at NY 63987841 at the base of Kennel Crags, this is not a true cave but a massive rock slab from the cliff above lying at an angle at the cliff base and forming a cavity about 7m north west-south east by 2.5m transversely and about 1.7m maximum height. At the south end of the west face is a wedge-shaped gap part of which has been infilled with stones the remainder forming an entrance. There is a hole about 0.5m square in the 'roof' at the cliff base opposite the entrance and it is possible this was used as a chimney. (Name not confirmed). Surveyed at 1:10,000. (2)
Scheduled. (3)
At the east side of the cave entrance is a vertical face of outcrop rock. On its south face are a series of small circular hollows, no more than 25mm in diameter and similar to proto-cup marks. There is alsoan angular groove carved on the rock face. Their origin is unknown. (4)
