Greenriggs possible Roman fort (Hartleyburn)
NY653613. 'Playing-card'-shaped enclosure visible as a slight earthwork, possibly a small Roman fortlet. (1)
A probable medieval or post medieval enclosure was seen as cropmarks on air photographs. The feature was originally seen as an earthwork but had been ploughed level and was showing as an earthwork on photographs from 1972. An area of ridge and furrow lay neatly within the confines of the enclosure. The enclosure is irregular in shape and approximately 70m by 50m. (2a)
This enclosure is probably the possible Roman fortlet described by Northumberland County SMR (in record 6126). Which is described as playing card shaped and is located 200m to the north-west of the mapped enclosure. On the available photography the enclosure initially looks playing card shaped, but one the photograph has been rectified it becomes clear that the enclosure is quite irregular in appearance. (2)
