Clearance cairns near Kellah Burn (Hartleyburn)
Centred at NY 640808, mainly on a flat topped rough pastured promontory in a bend in the Kellah Burn but spreading up the south facing hill slopes to the north, is an area of stone clearance heaps about 550m north-south by 160m east-west.
The heaps are well formed and range from about 7m down to 2m in diameter and about 0.5m maximum height. Several of them in the south have been severely robbed and mutilated.
Along the side of the east edge of the promontory and curving around the south are the remains of a large boulder 'Iron Age type wall' which has been robbed but may be contemporary with the heaps. There is no trace of any fields, definite lynchets, banks etc associated with the heaps. Area delineated on 1:10,560 Record Sheet. (1)
The earthwork remains of 14 possible Prehistoric cairns described by the previous authoritiy were seen centred as a group at NY 6408 6059 in a bend of the Kellah Burn. The western part of the cairn field was covered by the earthwork remains of Prehistoric cord rig (recorded separately in NMR NY66SW 102). A further possible cairn was also seen at NY 6390 6080.
These were mapped from historical aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hadrian's Wall NMP project. (2a)
