Carvoran Roman Cemetery (Greenhead)

(Previously recorded by the OS as NY 66 NE 12.2)

The cemetery, to the east of the fort, has produced a cremation burial found in 1856, and several tombstones, including one, with figure in relief, inscribed to DUVIANUS, ploughed up 1964 at NY 669655. (1)(2)(3)

Mr J Anderson, tenant of Carvoran farm, said that the tombstone was found in the summer of 1964 at exactly NY 66866556 and is now in the possession of Major J E Joicey of Blenkinsopp Hall, Haltwhistle. The immediate vicinity of the find, (the inferred area of the cemetery) is now a featureless pasture field. (4)

Scheduled. (5)

The alleged course of the Stanegate is largely obscured by hollow ways, though the side ditches of the Roman road may occasionally be made out among them. (6)

There is no surface trace of the cemetery associated with Carvoran Roman fort, and its extent remains unknown. Positioned from the descriptions given above to the general area of NY 667 656. (7a)

Evidence from air photographs indicate a group of possible Roman burial mounds (recorded in NY 66 NE 370, UID 1393582), which lie to the north-east of where the above tombstone was found. (7b)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (7c)

General association with HER 6051 (Carvoran Magna Roman Fort), HER 6075 (sepulchral stone), HER 6079 Carvoran), HER 24553 (burial mounds). (7)
