Walltown shrunken medieval village (Greenhead)
[Marginal] The extent of the old village of Walltown, which was to the east of the tower [NY 66 NE 37] may still be traced in grassy mounds of the tofts and crofts which once covered it; but its remains are now few and scattered. (1)
The ground east of the tower, lies mainly upon the south facing pasture covered dip slope of the Whin Sill and further south are low lying, slightly undulating pasture fields. No traces of a deserted medieval village could be found, and nothing is visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946). (2)
Documented in 1279, 1314-15 and 1666. No earthworks seen in the vicinity of the farm. (3)
There is no evidence of any settlement on all available air photographs for the Hadrian's Wall NMP Project. The only feature recorded is post medieval field boundary bank (see NY 66 NE 291, UID1391695). (4a)
General association with HER 6076 (Walltown Tower), HER 32822 (field boundaries). (4)
