Turret 44b (Mucklebank) (Greenhead)

[NY 6814 6671] Turret [G.S.] (Site of) (1)

Turret 44b, in the angle of the Wall overlooking the third nick of the 'Nine Nicks of Thirlwall', was excavated in 1892 and left open for inspection. It yielded a coin of Valens, and outside the south east angle, a centurial stone, in situ, inscribed Coh Ic Flau Cve. Now in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle. (2)(3)

The turret wall stands to a height of 1.8m and is well preserved. Published survey (25 inch) correct. (4)

Part of national monument number 26066, scheduling revised on 14th July 1997. Turret 44b is situated at the east end of a crag overlooking the nick in which 'King Arthur's Well' is located. It survives as an exposed stone feature. The inner face of the turret stands to a maximum height of 1.9m. Excavations at the turret were carried out in 1892 by Gibson who found a coin from the reign of Valens. (5)
