Knarsdale was a manor owned by the Pratt family in the 13th century. In 1666, Knarsdale had over 50 houses, but many of these were isolated farms scattered through the parishes of Knarsdale and Kirkhaugh. Today, Knarsdale consists of six houses, a farmstead and a rectory. Archaeologists call villages like Knarsdale shrunken medieval villages.
