Bloody Bush (Kielder)

(NY 5711 9102) Pillar: Bloody Bush (NAT). (1)
This is the traditional site of the defeat and death of a party of Northumbrians returning from a foray into Liddesdale in the 15th/16th century, who were resting in a thicket.
The pillar, called the Bloody Bush, stands exactly on the Border and is of ashlar masonry. It is about 15ft high, 6ft square at the base and 3ft square at the top. 'It is the old Toll Bar', set up on a metalled coal-road shortly after 1834. The road was in use in 1828 (date-stones on two substantial stone bridges just east of the pillar). (2)
No marker or significant features were noted in the area of the battle site. The pillar is as described. (3)
Management prescriptions: fell trees back from site, maintain masonry as required. (4)

DINLABYRE the PROPERTY OF WILLIAM OLIVER RUTHERFORD ESQ
PRIVATE ROAD upon which a Toll Gate is erected near Oakenshaw Bridge at which the following Toll Rates are exacted
VIZ
1st for horses employed in leading coal 2d each
2nd all other horses 3d each
3rd cattle 1d each
4th sheep, calves, swine 1/2d each
The above tolls exacted once a day.
NB Persons evading or refusing to pay at the above mentioned toll gate will be prosecuted for trespass.
