Seahouses burials (North Sunderland and Seahouses)
[NU 2160 3202] Human Remains, Cists, Urns, etc found AD 1905. (1)
Eight cists, most of them containing crouched burials, together with two beakers, one long-necked, (3) and two food vessels were found in 1905 while excavating for a reservoir. A stone inscribed with four concentric circles was found nearby. (2)(3)
The long-necked beaker and one food vessel are in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle (Acc Nos 1910.11 and 12 respectively). The present whereabouts of the others is not known. (4)
There was once a rock carving in a wall outside an 18th century cottage near the old North Sunderland railway station. Wall demolished in early 20th century and stone disappeared. May have come from one of the nearby burial mounds. The carving measured c.7-1/2ins diameter, the grooves were no more than 1/2ins deep. (5)
Bronze Age bipartite vase from Seahouses. 137mm high, 115mm rim diameter, 62mm base diameter. In Museum of Antiquities (1912.10) [possibly one of those described above, may be from NU 23 SW 3]. (6)
