Monks House (Bamburgh; North Sunderland and Seahouses)
Monkshouse, formerly called Brocksmouth, stands on the left of the road from Bamburgh to North Sunderland (NU 20383354). The older name occurs in a charter of 1257 granted to the monks of Farne for the building of a granary there, and the present one was given to the building subsequently erected in 1495. A will of 1597 suggests that there was also a chapel here. (1)
The present buildings are modern. (2)
NU 20383354. Monks House chapel/grange. Blocked up architectural feature in house annexe suggests re-use of some older structure. Still in use. Set in dunes. See slides Y19-20. (3)
Brock Burn House and attached cottage to left. Grade II listed building. Early 19th century house incorporating earlier masonry. (4)
The current buildings are early 19th century, although some of the earlier buildings may have been reused. By the end of the 19th century some of the buildings were used as St Cuthbert's Inn and it became a resort for visitors in the summer months who culd also lodge there. (5)
