World War II bombing decoy site (Longhoughton)
NU 259132. World War II dummy aerodrome for RAF Acklington airfield. Q (night) and K (day) types. Dummy Hurricane aircraft deployed. The Q site is recorded on 19 June 1940 and 1 August 1941. The K site is recorded on 13 March 1940 and closed 25 September 1941. (1)
Bombing decoy at Boulmer the cover for the nearby RAF Acklington. (2)
The airfield was re-established in 1943 and RAF Boulmer was used for the rest of the war as a training flying school. At the end of the war in 1945, the airfield closed and fields reverted back to agriculture. (3)
The NGR given in source 2 concords with that given in source 1. There was no conclusive evidence of any survival of features from the bombing decoy. (4a)
RAF Acklington, which was in 13 Group, was a base for Hurricane aircraft at the time that the decoy was constructed. (4b)
A Second World War bombing decoy is visible as structures on air photographs. The feature consists of a series of camouflaged runways, military buildings and trackways. No surface features are visible on the latest 1999 Ordnance Survey vertical photography. (4c)
