Howick deserted medieval village (Longhoughton)
The medieval hamlet of Howick is mentioned in a document written in 1580, when 19 tenants lived there. The village, which included a chapel, was demolished in the 18th century to make way for a landscape park. A new estate village with the same name was established outside the park. Archaeologists call medieval settlements which have been abandoned `deserted medieval villages'.
