Bronze Age cremation cemetery at Howick Heugh (Longhoughton)
Between approximately 2500 and 3500 thousand years ago, during what archaeologists call the Bronze Age, people buried their dead in a cremation cemetery at Howick Heugh. The burials were placed in an earth mound enclosed by a ring of stones, a ditch and a bank. The cemetery was discovered in 1972, on land that was about to be quarried. Archaeologists excavated it, and discovered four cremations buried in pots. One pot held the remains of a woman and a baby. A shale pendant had been placed in one pot along with the cremated remains.
