Hilly Law (Warkworth)
In a field on the Low Buston estate called the south Hilly Law, which, with two other fields named respectively the north and west Hilly Law, occupy a ridge running north-south, there was found in 1815 a food vessel by two men removing stones for road mending. It was 5-1/2 inches high, 7 inches diameter at top and 2-3/4 inches at bottom and had twisted thong decoration. It was placed in a cist 3ft 6ins long, 2ft 2ins wide and 2ft 3ins deep formed be two side stones and two end stones placed upright on a base stone on top. The urn is now in the Museum at Alnwick Castle, case C, no 8. (1)
I know of no field on the Low Buston Farm known as the Hilly Law. (2)
I have asked the farm labourers and none of us know a Hilly Law field on this farm. (3)
I seem to recall seeing the name Hilly Law marking a field on a plan in an old book owned by a friend of mine. The field was that one to the west of Low Buston farm [centred NU 22240744] but whether it is the north, west or south Hilly Law [see T1] I cannot say. In view of what my husband found in our field [centred NU 22130723] I am inclined to say that the former field may have been the north Hilly Law and ours, which has no name, the south Hilly Law. [see NU 20 NW 8 for
description of finds made by Mr Thompson]. (4)
Area centred NU 22240744. In view of the information given in T3, it can only be stated that the field named by Mr Thompson is the possible field in which this BA cist was found. No documentary evidence is at hand to prove the name of the field. The food vessel, with four perforated lugs, is in Alnwick Castle Museum where it is exhibited as No 6. Thus, for Case C, no 8 in T1, please read Case C no 6. The field in question is at present ploughed and there is no trace of any barrow in which the cist may have been, to be seen. (5)
Bipartite vase with shoulder groove and four pierced stops, found with an inhumation in a cist at Warkworth. Contained ashes. Measures 140mm high, 179mm rim diameter, 100mm base diameter. In Alnwick Castle Museum. (6)
