Sword (Shilbottle)

The handle of an iron sword found in Shilbottle Wood is preserved in the museum at Alnwick Castle case F, no.970; the bone handle is encircled by longitudinal rods of iron 5 inches in length; the imperfect blade is now 7-1/2 inches long and much decayed. (This find is listed under township of Shilbottle Wood House; there is no Shilbottle Wood named, on OS 6 inch, in this parish). (1)

(Area centred NU 21120903) There is no wood now extant in this parish of Woodhouse but on a Tithe Map of 1850 there are three closes known as Wood Closes (see field names on OS 6 inch), and it is possible that this sword fragment was found in the area occupied by these closes. It is in Alnwick Castle Museum, as stated in T1, and is in a case containing only medieval antiquities. (2)
