This monument to Grace Darling was built in 1842. It is 33m west of St Aidan's Church. The effigy is a copy, and the original is now inside the church. Grace Darling was the daughter of the lighthouse keeper on Longstone in the Farne Islands. On 7th September 1838 the SS Forfarshire struck a rock and sank. Many of the passengers drowned, but Grace Darling and her father rescued nine survivors and looked after them in the lighthouse for three days. She became a great Victorian celebrity, but died young at the age of 26. This is a Grade II* listed monument protected by law.
