Elford Deserted Village (Beadnell)

NU 188310 deserted medieval village at Elford. (1) (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1947)).

Elford now consists of one farm with associated cottages. No visible depopulation remains in the vicinity. Possibly non-nucleated type. (2)

Elford deserted medieval village, NU 188309. Elford was given to the Bamburgh cell of Nostell Priory in the 13th century. After the Dissolution in 1545 there were ten messuages in the vill and ten tenants. In 1580 eleven tenants liable for Border Service.
Hearth Tax return of 1665: five households. Court Roll of Bamburgh for 1696: 19 cottagers besides the five leaseholders. Court Roll of 1778: four leaseholders, 18 cottagers. Armstrong's map of 1769 shows a hamlet and a mansion.
No earthworks visible. Site presumed at modern farm. (3)
