Spindlestone shrunken medieval village (Easington (Northumberland))
NU151332. Deserted medieval village at Spindlestone. [Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (R.A.F. 1958)]. (1)
Spindlestone now consists of five dwellings at Spindlestone Mill, (NU 149334), and a farm with four cottages at NU151332. No visible depopulation remains in the vicinity of either. (2)
Aerial photographs show the earthwork remains of a shrunken settlement with associated broad ridge and furrow. (3)
Spindleston (including Glororem) deserted medieval village. Documentary references: 1296, 1302, 1321, 1336, 1387, 1580, 1736, 1821, 1824. Little indication of pre-19th century activity. At NU 152332 are earthworks of former enclosures, and on the N side of the road is an area of ridge and furrow. (4)
