Outchester deserted medieval village (Easington (Northumberland))

NU 147335 Deserted medieval village at Outchester. (1)

(Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1947)). (2)

Crop-marks at NU 142334. There are no surface indications of depopulation at either of the positions noted. The former, however, coincides with the remains of what may represent a medieval steading (NU 13 SW 10). Supporting evidence for more extensive occupation than at present is implicit in the former existence of a pele tower at Outchester (NU 13 SW 14), and the 19th century recovery of a medieval coin hoard there (NU 13 SW 13). Documentary references: 1296, 1336, 1580, 1736, 1821. (4)
