Bronze Age burials (Eglingham)
(NU 15532029) Cairn diameter 35ft at north side of sand pit in township of South Charlton; two urns were found in 1908 and 1916 in the north face of the sand pit. The cairn was excavated in August and September when the primary cist burial with no grave goods and nine secondary burials were found. The secondaries consisted of two cists, seven food vessels, one urn, two incense cups and two cremation burials (this list includes the two urns found in 1908 and 1916). Full description. (1)
A mutilated cairn measuring 14m x 9m and 0.8m high with hollow in the centre containing a large flat stone slab, probably the coverstone of a cist. The northern face of a disused clay pit has cut into the cairn, but only a few boulders can be seen in it. Present location of excavated finds not ascertained. (2)
The remains are as described by F1. A cist measuring 1.3m x 0.9m with coverstone is visible in the centre. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Eight vessels from barrow: i) small vessel from a secondary interment in a barrow, in a pit protected by two flat stones on edge. Vessel measures 125mm high, 120mm rim diameter, 70mm base diameter. Decorated. ii) bipartite vase from a cairn in the primary burial and central cist containing dust and ashes. Measures 127mm high, 140mm rim diameter, 60mm base diameter. Decorated. iii) bipartite vase from secondary cist, with charcoal, beneath circular barrow. Measures 105mm high, 124mm rim diameter, 55mm base diameter. Decorated. iv) fragment of Bronze Age pottery from pit beneath a circular barrow, with a second vessel, lost. v) secondary interment beneath cairn, vessel now lost. vi) secondary interment in barrow in pit with burnt bones and charcoal. Bipartite, 203mm high, 172mm rim diameter, 86mm base diameter, decorated. vii) collared urn, 143mm high, 130mm rim diameter, 80mm base diameter. Secondary interment, contained bones, charcoal and incense cup. Decorated. viii) vessel inverted over cremation, 319mm high, 255mm rim diameter. Secondary interment, lost.
