Newham village (Ellingham)

(NU 175285) Deserted medieval village at Newham. (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs (RAF 1946)). (1)

Newham is a shrunken hamlet centred at NU 17452845. There is no visible evidence of depopulation. (2)

Documentary references: 1238, 1296, 1320, 1336, 1472, 1566, 1580, 1620, 1685, 1702, 1727, 1757, 1801, 1821. The main cluster of cottages today are grouped at the northern exit from the village (NU 174284). However, the earthwork remains of several former buildings were observed at the east end of the village site at NU 175283. (3)
