Bronze Age finds (Alnwick)
The fragments of a Bronze Age gold penannular ring were found in 1850 by workmen when excavating for the branch line at Cooper's Hill near Alnwick railway station (a and b). In the possession of the Newcastle Antiquarian Society, they were restored by the author, who dates it as late Bronze Age. (1)
Total finds consisted of two gold penannular rings found in association with a socketed and looped bronze celt in an urn of characteristic Bronze Age pottery. (2)
(Area NU 192129) Cooper's Hill is a small hill laid out as ornamental gardens with a modern monument on the highest point.
No further information regarding the exact site of the finds was discovered during field investigation. Alnwick railway station is situated on the lower (southern) slopes of Cooper's Hill and from the information it would appear that the finds were made very close to the station. (3)
The gold penannular rings are, at the present time, in the vaults of the Society of Antiquaries bank in Newcastle. The celt and urn are unaccounted for. (4)
