Bronze Age Grave (Alnwick)
(NU 17201359) Cist (Found AD 1861). (1)
Discovered whilst excavations were being made for a new road in 1861 about 150x west of Moor Lodge. (2)
The cist was complete, measuring app 3ft 8ins long 2ft 5ins wide, and 17ins deep; the contents consisted solely of a food vessel, no bones or evidence of burning were discovered. Food vessel now in Alnwick Castle Museum.
Another cist about 50x distant, was discovered in 1820. Within it was a crouched burial with the head laid to the south west (No mention of any accompanying grave furniture). (3)(4)(5)
The site occurs in thick shrubbery and is marked by a small hollow to the south of the road. Near the road is a small heap of undressed stones of varying sizes and 2m to the south of them is a large slab of sandstone, partly buried. The exposed portion measures 1.2m long and it is 0.05m thick, with 0.3m of its width visible above ground level. This slab is probably part of the cist.
Perambulation of the area revealed no trace of the other cist mentioned. The whole area has been subjected to re-afforestation and is much disturbed. (6)
Food vessel is of typical Yorkshire type and form showing marked Ne B influence. In museum case H No 12. (7)
F1's report on the site still applies. (8)
Bowl found in a cist near Moor Lodge. Measured 153mm high, 172mm rim diameter, base missing. Lozenge decoration. In Alnwick Castle.
Bipartite vase from Hulne Park with inhumation in a cist [same as above?]. Vessel measures 102mm high, 127mm rim diameter, 56mm base diameter. Decorated all over with comb or notched stamp. In Alnwick Castle Museum. (9)
