Friars Well (Denwick)

(NU 17051633) Friars Well. (1)

This well consists of a circular stone trough 1.3m in diameter at ground level, having within it an iron container about 1m deep. The well is not included in the County List of Holy wells. (2)

Well now covered by a wooden cover-board and fed by an inlet pipe. In general use. (3)

Condition unchanged. Published survey (25 inch) correct. (4)

Friars Well, 50m west of Friars Well Lodge. Grade II listed building. Wellhead, possibly early 19th century in its present form. Dressed stone. Circular surround with internal step and shaped lip on west. Parts of the conduit carrying water to Hulne Friary were found and taken up in 1816. (5)
