Standing stone south-west of White House (Denwick)

(NU 15741678) Standing Stone. (1)

A large erect stone in a plantation lends its name to a large field to the north called Standing Stone Close (2). The stone is 5ft 4ins high, roughly square in section with sides varying from 22ins to 25ins and badly weathered. Referred to in a charter of 1283 as 'the great standing stone on the height' (2). (Illustration shows a trough-like depression in the top). (2)(3)

Description of standing stone correct. The depression in the top of the stone is due to weathering. On the south east face a cross has been inscribed consisting of pitted holes - obviously modern. (4)

Condition unchanged. (5)
