Church of St Maurice (Eglingham)
Medieval church, 13th century. (1)
Church of St Maurice, Grade II*. (2)
Church includes a war memorials. (3)(4)
The church and its structural history is described in detail by H L Honeyman in the Northumberland County History vol 14 (1935), p366-75. The description and structural history by Ryder queries only one or two points. Eglingham is probably a very early ecclesiastical site; medieval records describe 'Eagwulfincham' being given to the Lindisfarne community in AD737 and of a church consecrated there in the ninth century. A dowsing survey in the 1980s traced the outline of a typical Saxon church. This is an important church that potentially stands upon a very early site, and its surviving fabric, albeit much-altered, retains evidence of a complex medieval and post-medieval history. (5)
