Bronze Age cairn, Hedgeley (Hedgeley)
NU 1094 1523 Remains of robbed cairn. Circle of earth-fast stones 60ft diameter. Just inside the south edge is the suggestion of a secondary interment. (1)
The circle of stones, which is incomplete, has an apparent diameter of 14.5m. The remains of the cairn within the circle has a maximum height of 1m. The suggested secondary interment referred to appears as a slight hollow on the south side. (2)
The peristalith is formed by intermittent stones, only a few of which appear to be artificially placed, the remainder being outcrops. Further, the stone-studded interior is little different in character from the surrounding area, although a small modern cairn has presumably been constructed from original loose material. In general, the situation is ideal for a round cairn, but the surviving evidence is not conclusive. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
