Bronze Age cairns and Neolithic or Bronze Age cup marked stones, Snook Bank, Longframlington (Longframlington)
NU 132054 A group of cup-marked rocks on high ground to the north east of Snook Bank Farm. Most of the markings are single cups, a few with single rings, and a very small number with double rings. There are also a few basin cups and occasional groups of midgets, but very few ducts or channels. (1)
NU 12740543. A group of cup markings are on a large expanse of exposed living rock, 450m to the north west of Snook Bank Farm, upon steeply sloping pastureland which faces the south, and at about 750 feet above sea level. The hill slopes were perambulated to the north and north east of this farm, but no other cup marked rocks were located.
The limestone rock shelves out from the hillside, and is approx 35m by 15m in area, covered in places with patches of turf. It lies within an area of bracken. In the centre near the southern edge are two cups with single rings pecked into the rock, also two single cups. 8m to the north east are 18 cups and three cups with single rings, with overall diameters of 0.15m. There are several isolated single cups higher up the rock face to the north west.
No traces of double rings, basin cups or ducts were found (authority 1 refers). (2)
Unchanged and as described by authority 2. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
There is no trace of any cup and ring marked rocks in the area NU 132054 as alleged by authority 1, and it is probable that he was referring to the outcrop of rock at NU 12750543 which is as described authority 2. Surveyed at 1:10,000.
About 200m across the hillslope to the north west (NU 126055) just below a quarry are several boulders, some with a few small circular depressions on them, possibly weathered cup marks but most probably due to weathering. (4)
Snook Bank carvings. NU 12740543. Appear on large outcrop rocks with simple cups and grooves and rings. Some have fresh pick marks. (5)
Five decorated rocks at the following NGRs: NU 12750545 (three rocks), NU 12690530 (two cups one with ring), NU 12650521 (8 cups, two with rings). (6)
Scheduled. (7)
A detailed survey of this area was carried out in 1996 prior to scheduling by Northumberland County Council and the City of Newcastle Archaeology Unit, for the purposes of land management. The survey identified and recorded a number of sites including the cairns and cup and ring marked stones as mentioned above.(8)
