Cross bases at Edlingham (Edlingham)
Two large socketed base stones, for cross shafts (probably memorial and of pre-Conquest date), stand in Edlingham churchyard. (1)
NU 11450911. The two socket stones lie in the church-yard south of the west end of the chancel.
The larger measures 0.5m square at the base, 0.4m square at the top and is 0.5m high. The other stone is 0.5m square and 0.3m high.
Neither of the stones have any form of decoration and their pre-Conquest origin must be considered extremely doubtful.
There is also a small fragment of pre-Conquest cross shaft, decorated with an interlacing foliage design, in the north east corner of the nave of the church. (2)
Cross bases as described, see photographs. (3)
Not listed by Collingwood. (4)
Part of cross-shaft, inside church. Found in 1901 by vicar, Rev J M Russell, 'near a spring in the glebe field about 500 yards from the Church of St John the Baptist.' Measures 0.355m x 0.235m x 0.165m deep. Broken and very worn. The shaft is edged with a double roll moulding. Inhabited scroll and interlace decoration on three faces. Date, mid-8th century. (5)
Two cross bases; one probably pre-Conquest, the other medieval. (6)
