Berrington was a member of the Bishop of Durham's estate of Islandshire, held in thegnage by Eustace de Kyloe in 1208/10. IPM of 1347: records 200 acres of land and 18 acres of meadow in demesne, 16 husbandlands and three cottages.
1560/1 Survey noted the existence of a tower recently repaired by the farmer John Reavely. Armstrong's map of 1769 shows the Clavering family mansion north of the burn and a small village to the south.
Extensive ridge and furrow cultivation around modern farm, north and south of the burn. In the field west of the old grounds of the mansion there are earthworks which may be part of the former village (NU 006433). (3)
