Iron Age enclosure (Kyloe)

[NU 01454207] Camp (Site of). (1)

An elliptical earthwork with diameters of 150 yds, and 90 yds. One rampart and ditch. (2)

Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age univallate (forts, settlements and enclosures]. (3)

Now virtually ploughed out, but a fragment of the northern arc survives as a well-spread bank 15m wide and 0.3m high. The continuation of the perimeter is also traceable to the west as a slight ground swelling, and in the east by vegetation discoloration. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (4)

Condition unchanged. The remains, although slight, suggest an original enclosure of some strength. This in conjunction with its semi-defensive situation, on the edge of a small stream valley, supports an Iron Age classification. (5)
