Collier's Dene old coal workings (Tillside)
Extensive area of old workings, shafts, heaps, especially from 'bellpit' method of working. (1)(2)
Numerous post Medieval coal workings/bell pits, spoil heaps, and a quarry are visible as earthworks on air photographs. They are centre at NU 0913 3041. The majority of bell pits and their associated spoil heaps are no more than 30m across, however at NU 0927 3007, NU 0941 3006, and NU 0951 3009, there are three particularly large examples - the largest spreading to over 80m. At NU 0905 3005 there is a post Medieval quarry (possibly limestone extraction). It has a working face measuring 257m long. These features are a continuation of the coal workings recorded in NU 02 NE 44. (3a-b)
General association with HER 34328. (3)
