Middleton Park (Belford with Middleton)

NU 0935. Middleton Park, surrounds Middleton Hall. There are small lakes in the area and the park is surrounded by mixed woodland. No public right of way. (1)

The grounds of Middleton Hall are 'a romantic Victorian landscape of lakes, waterfalls and rhododendrons'. (2)

'Middleton Hall is approached through a castellated gateway ... which stands at the entrance to the grounds. A drive, sheltered by luxuriant trees and shrubs, which flourish on the margins of small artificial lakes, leads to the house itself ...'. (3)

The estate is a reasonable size, albeit over the course of the 20th century the estate land has been reduced in size, it remains 28 acres around the Hall. What remains is the more intimate designed setting close to the Hall, including the mature woodland, the upper and lower lake fed by the Middleton Burn, and associated buildings and structures. The present-day drive winds through woodland and past water features (lower and upper lake) to arrive at the Hall. (4)
