Iron Age enclosure, Middleton (Belford with Middleton)
[NU 09613627] Earthwork. (1)
Appears to have been oval in shape with probably two ramparts. (2)
Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age univallate [forts, settlements and enclosures]. (3)
The remains of a sub-oval earthwork situated on a craggy headland in a wooded area. It is formed by a fragmentary single stony bank 2m-3m wide and 1.2m maximum height, with a probable simple entrance in the north-west. Vague traces of the completing arc of the enclosure are discernible in the pasture field to the south. No internal remains are apparent. It is not a fort, despite the defensive position, but the general form and construction support an Iron Age origin. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (4)
Condition unchanged. (5)
