Hepburn deserted medieval village (Tillside)

A survey of 1715 refers to the house of Robbert Heburn Esq (NU02SE 3) as being in a large village situated on rising ground. (Nothing visible on available aerial photographs, RAF 1944). (1)

Centred NU 071248. The ground in the vicinity of the Bastle (NU 02 SE 3) is very 'hummocky' and suggestive of buried foundations although spoil from the old quarry (NU 07092484) may account for some of the mounds.
The heavy snow, with drifting, present at the time of investigation may conceal other less noticeable surface indications.
The village was probably contemporary with the Bastle. Date and reason for desertion not known. (2)

There is no visible evidence of depopulation. The site falls within Chillingham Park which may be the reason for desertion. (3)

Hebburn deserted medieval village. Documentary references: 1242, 1296, 1368, 1580, 1541, 1769. Earthwork enclosures and building foundations to north and south of road - around
NU 069247. (4)
