Ilderton Farm cist (Cheviotside)
On 14 December 1863, a cist was ploughed up on Ilderton farm on a round knoll which rises several feet above the ordinary level of the adjoining ground. 'It is difficult to say whether any barrow covered it or not' (although Mr Moffatt is believed to be referring to the same burial when he states that he was at the opening of a cist in one of the tumuli in the Galloway field, Ilderton estate, 'about 16 or 18 ago').
The cist was formed of four sandstone slabs set on edge, with a flooring of small flags, and with a coverstone measuring 5ft 6in by 3ft broad. The cist lay east and west and contained a doubled-up body, laid on its left side, but no urn or weapon.
The dimensions of the cist are stated as being '...about 8ft 6ins long by 1ft 10ins wide and 18ins deep' (although, from the arrangement of the body and the size of the coverstone, it is suggested that there has been a misprint and that the length should read '... about 3ft 6ins'. (1)
Centred NU 022230. Galloway Field, was indicated by the Farm Steward, Mr James Guthrie of Ilderton Farm. The field, under pasture, with a general slope to the north-east, is covered by natural glacial mounds, giving an impression of a collection of large tumuli.
Mr Guthrie has no knowledge of the cist or of its present whereabouts. (2)
