Stone Axe (Tillside)
(NU 0921 2840) Stone axe found by M Anderson about 1945 protruding from the side of a newly cut drain and about 1ft 6ins to 2ft 0ins below the surface. (Approximate site indicated to investigator). (1)
A very fine specimen of a small Neolithic polished axe made from a green stone (possibly whinstone) It is 3-1/2ins long, 2ins wide at the cutting edge and 1ins wide at the butt with a thickness of 5/8ins. Of tapering form and slightly asymmetric, the only flaw is a slight chipping at the butt end. The axe is highly polished. It remains in the possession of the finder. Find spot occurs in a rough pasture field. (2)
