Fowberry deserted medieval village (Tillside)

Fowberry deserted medieval village. (1)

Fowberry was a member of the barony of Alnwick; held by William de Fowberry in 1242. 1296: 15 taxpayers. 1580: five tenants listed. No village was noted by Warburton in the early 18th century. Armstrong's map of 1769 shows a hamlet to the north-west of the emparked Hall. The site of the village is presumed to lie in the vicinity of Weetwood Hall. (2)

Centred at NU 0360 2910 is a tract of ridge and furrow cultivation. (3)

Village Plantation at NU 03792941. A likely former road is visible on lidar imagery running through the plantation extending the line of the current road to the west and lining up with Fowberry Bridge. The road is shown in this location on Armstrong's map of 1769, and went out of use before Fryer's map of 1820. Possible plot boundaries also visible on lidar imagery are inconclusive when examined on the ground. (4)
