Prehistoric enclosures on Fowberry Moor (Tillside)
A camp in North Plantation, Fowberry Moor, Chatton incorporates two cup and ring marked rocks. 'A' measures 5ft 6ins by 6ft east-west, and bears 38 single cups and three cup and ring marks. It is situated in the outer rampart 30ft south of a point 54ft along a pathway from a gateway on the west side of the plantation [NU 02072783].
'B', on excavation, was found to be built into the inner rampart, and is obviously not in situ. It measures 7ft 6ins x 1ft 2ins x 2ft 6ins deep, bears various cup and ring marks, and is situated 28ft south of a point 94ft along the above mentioned path. (NU 02082784). (1)
NU 02092787. Earthwork covered by dense bracken and not investigated.
Rock 'A' is largely covered by lichen, but three obvious single cups are visible, together with 26 small cups closely set in the north-west corner. There are also numerous other indistinguishable markings.
Rock 'B' is flush with the ground, and bears four cup and ring markings, and two probable single cups on the exposed surface. (2)
A sub-circular multivallate earthwork, extensively mutilated and heavily overgrown. It is obviously of defensive type, although its position at about the 400ft contour on an east facing slope has no natural strength, and the construction is in the local Iron Age tradition. The second of the two cup and ring rocks noted could not be relocated and is probably obscured by decaying vegetation and debris.
Abutting the east side at NU 02152791, and probably encroaching upon the original limits of the earthwork, is a small circular enclosure bounded by an earth and stone bank, and containing the remains of a probable stone founded hut. This, also, is overgrown, but it appears to be a homestead of the type locally associated with Romano-British native settlement. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3)
NU 021279: Incised rocks, North Plantation, Fowberry Moor, scheduled. (4)
NU 021278. Settlement. (5)
NU 02072784. North Plantation, outcrop, cups, occuli and cups and rings. Two carved rocks visible - one close to the gate on the line of a prehistoric enclosure, and the second further east with the rampart built on top. Another stone recorded by Mr Davidson in 1933-4, recovered after originally revealed, not seen today. (6)
(H00521) North Plantation A and B. NU 02072784. Two marked outcrops. (7)
