Iron Age enclosure, Shawdon Hill Farm, Hedgeley (Hedgeley)
(NU 08191398) Camp. (1)
Close to the east side of the public road above Shawdon Hill Farm are faint traces of a circular camp formed of two concentric circles at about 30' apart. Internal diameter c.130 yards. (2)(3)
This earthwork is situated on the summit of a slight hill. Ploughing has almost destroyed the ramparts and what remains appear as a slight bank 0.2m to 0.5m in height. The plan shows the remaining banks conventionally, it being impossible to determine their exact extent. The remains are too slight for any conclusions to be made regarding age or purpose. The whole area is under pasture. (4)
Listed as pre-Roman Iron Age univallate (forts, settlements and enclosures). (5)
The work is now barely discernible as the broad ground swelling of what appears to have been a single rampart (MacLauchlan's description suggests bi-vallation).
Both its proportions and situation, however, are in keeping with the local type of non-defensive Iron Age enclosure. Published survey (25 inch) revised. (6)
