Bronze Age cairns and Roman causeway, Shawdon, Hedgeley (Hedgeley)

Over 3000 years ago, in what archaeologists call the Bronze Age period, people buried their dead in stone-lined cists inside cairns. Eighteenth century workmen found human remains and pots in what would have once been a cairn. They also found a cist, which once would have held another burial. Nearby, a 19th century writer reports that the workmen also found a Roman causeway, and evidence of a `triangular' building. Modern archaeologists have not been able to check the accuracy of this report.
