Old Fawdon Hill (Ingram)

Old Fawdon Hill cord rig contemporary with an enclosed timber-built settlement (NU 01 SW 6 or 11?). Ring groove house types at settlement site. Small plot cultivation. (1)

The NRHE has produced 3 records for this site NRHE UID 1058679 Cord Rig, NRHE UID 1058675 Small isolated hut circle and NRHE UID 1058680 Prehistoric cultivation remains - small patch of cord rig, possibly part of a larger field.

NRHE UID 1058679
Faint traces of cord rig are located at 280m OD, ranging from 1.4m - 2.0m wide, running parallel to the 5-degree NW-facing slope. The ridges are barely visible in bracken and long grass, and are cut by
E-W sheep tracks. (2a)

NRHE UID 1058675
This small isolated hut circle lies on flat moorland at 270 m OD; it is poorly defined and generally circular with an internal diameter of 2.5m to 3m within low turf-covered stone banks, 0.2m high and 2.3m wide, with occasional stones protruding although there are no visible wall faces. The hut appears to cut the SE end of a 7.5m long NW-SE orientated bank, 3.2m wide and 0.2m high. A slight wall line also continues S of the hut. No entrances are visible in the hut although the bank is very minimal in the SE. The association with the cord rig 16m to the SW [NU 0113/9] may be interesting. (2b)

NRHE UID 1058680
A small 15m square patch of cord rig, with an average width between furrows of 1.4m, is orientated NW-SE. It is located on open grassland at 280m OD, and survives in the void between fields of broad ridge-and-furrow to the N and S [NU 0113/22]. Very faint and minimal in height, this patch of cord would appear to form a pattern, in terms of orientation and definition, with [NU 0113/7 & 8].

Another patch of cord rig visible on a field visit on 7-APR-1988 but invisible at the time of the present survey, is located to the W of this with its general extent pecked on the RCHME overlay as [NU 0113/9A]. This may suggest that the whole summit of this plateau was once completely ploughed in this form, perhaps in comparison with the Linhope model (see NT 91 NE 71). The possible hut circle to the E [NU 0113/4] may be a relevant part of this system though its condition is poor. (2a)
