Cairns on Titlington Pike (Hedgeley)
About 1/2 mile west of Titlington North Camp (NU 01 NE ) at the highest part of the crag (near Titlington Pike) there are three cairns. (1)
'A' NU 08871586. A heather-covered cairn situated on the summit of a rise, 13m diameter, 1.5m high. Mutilated in the centre and on the north east side. No trace of ditch.
'B' NU 08751600. OS Trig pillar situated on a mutilated cairn with an apparent diameter of 22m and a maximum height of 2m. Heather covered and hollow in centre. No ditch.
No trace was found of the third cairn. (2)
Two round cairns. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
'A' is generally as described by F1, remains of a kerb aare visible around the south west side. 'B' when viewed from the west appears to be centrally placed on an artificial platform 24m diameter and 0.7m high. The feature, however, merges with the skirt of the mound elsewhere, and may be no more than a terrace worn down by cattle.
A small mutilated stony mound at NU 08761595 (C) is probably Hodgson's third cairn, although it not comparable with either 'A' or 'B'. Surveyed at 1:2500.
At NU 08811594 a turf-covered rock outcrop with an overlay of loose stone may represent the site of an additional cairn. (4)
NU 0875 1595. Round cairn 50m S of Titlington Pike. Scheduled RSM No 21025. A round cairn situated near the highest point of Titlington Pike, commanding extensive views to the N, W and S. The cairn is 7.5m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 1m. A hollow in the centre of the mound is the result of an unrecorded partial excavation. (5)
NU 0875 1599. Round cairn on Titlington Pike. Scheduled RSM No 21018. The spread cairn is 24m across and stands to a maximum height of 1m. There is a hollow at is centre, the result of an unrecorded partial excavation. An OS trig pillar has been erected on its NW side. 'B' above. (6)
NU 0887 1585. Round cairn 190m SE of Titlington Pike. Scheduled RSM No 21016. The cairn is 13m in diameter and 1.5m high. A large hole in the centre of the cairn and a narrow channel leading in a NE direction from this are thought to be the result of partial antiquarian excavation. There are traces of a stone kerb around the SW perimeter of the cairn. 'A' above. (7)
NU 0881 1594. Round cairn 78m SE of Titlington Pike. Scheduled RSM No 21017. The cairn is 11m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 1m. (8)
A Bronze Age round cairn, centred at NU 0887 1585, is visible as an earthwork on air photographs. This feature measures 13m in diameter. (9)
