Bronze Age cist burial, Beanley West Farm (Hedgeley)

An urn found in a cist on rising ground on the outfield of Beanley near the Crawley boundary in Jan 1824 is preserved in Alnwick Castle Museum. (1)

Found in the Out-Field on Beanley West Farm height 5ins width at top 5ins; the cist was surrounded by stones. A small piece of flint, like an unfinished arrow-head, and a human tooth are said to have been found in the urn (Listed under Food Vessel). (2)

Food vessel type 5a (Abercromby type). (3)

Present location of food vessel correct. There is no farm at Beanley called Beanley West Farm and the field name 'Out-Field' is not known by any of the local inhabitants. (Tithe maps consulted. No information obtained). (4)

Food vessel from 'out field' [as above]. Bowl, 127mm high, 127mm rim diameter, 80mm base diameter. In Alnwick Castle museum. (5)
